Contemporary Drumming Essentials:   Volume 1

is written for the goal oriented drummer.   What does this mean...?   It means that it contains numerous co-ordination exercises designed to develop outstanding abilities in the rock and rock-funk styles of drumming.   There is also a focus on developing the use of the left foot on the hi-hat as a time-source: 2&4, quarter notes, eighth notes and off-beats.   In addition, there are several different ride ostinato patterns that will be developed: eighth notes, quarter notes, off-beats, eighth notes with accents "on" the beat and eighth notes with accents on the "and" of each beat(off-beats).

The book is divided into three sections. Section One is entitled, The Approach. In this section, there are articles with concepts and advice to help the student develop a balanced approach to the musical and mechanical aspects of drumming.   Articles include: Drumming and this Book, How to Practice (published in Modern Drummer, Percussive Notes and Band World), A Physical Approach and an article entitled, You Are What You Listen To.

Sections Two and Three are entitled, The Practice.   These sections contains exercises that develop the skills necessary to make it in today's music scene.   Each exercise contains a corresponding Practice Tip that explains how to approach each exercise, how to break the beats down and build them, one part at a time.   There is no play-along CD as this book is written in the tradition of such great books as Jim Chapin's Advanced Techniques for the Modern Drummer with emphasis on developing the coordination skills required to play the drums smoothly and relaxed.

Contemporary Drumming Essentials:   Volume 2 goes where few books dare to travel.   This book WILL develop outstanding virtuoso, groove and improvisational skills on the drumset.   It contains three sections: 16th note Grooves, Developing a Smooth Time-Feel and Interdependence Refined.
Section One - 16th Note Grooves contains exercises to help you develop both single-handed(RRRR) and double-handed(RLRL) 16th note funk style grooves with two and three surface ride patterns, 32nd note/double stroke rolls and open hi-hat accents over numerous bass drum variations.
Section Two - Developing a Smooth Time-Feel contains common bass drum ostinatos(Surdo, Mambo and Baião patterns) with a variety of hand rhythms with accents played on top.   There are instructions for right hand lead, left hand lead and mixed sticking patterns plus double stroke 32nd notes incorporated into the grooves.   This section will develop a smooth, vertical alignment of your hands and feet, as well as, introduce improvisational skills with your hands while maintaining repeated bass drum and hi-hat patterns underneath.

Section Three - Inter-dependence Refined contains exercises that are the reverse of those found in Section Two plus exercises that alternate between hand and feet patterns in an improvisational fashion.   Each of the exercises are written using syncopated rhythms(melodies).   Each exercise contains a corresponding Practice Tip to help approach each exercise.   For those that want to know and develop the secrets of how to play relaxed, smooth and with incredible coordination abilities, like Steve Gadd, Dave Weckl or Vinnie Calaiuta, then this book is for you!
